Since it’s Christmastime, there aren’t a ton of new zombie-related releases to review. So, I thought it would be a decent time to clean out my backlog and finally publish some more movie reviews.
I’ve got to be honest. With Zombie Apocalypse, I was a little confused. I’ve played the video game titled Zombie Apocalypse. I’ve seen all of the George Romero movies. I’ve seen Ving Rhames in Dawn of the Dead as well as Day of the Dead. So, with Zombie Apocalypse, a direct-to-DVD release by The Asylum, Rhames hits a hat-trick of undead movie roles, none of which are related.
In this flick, Ving Rhames, Taryn Manning, Eddie Steeples (Darnell of My Name is Earl), Anya Monzikova and others make their way to the last slice of civilization: Catalina Island. Having a dense population of survivors on an isolated island appealed to me, but honestly, I wasn’t paying much attention. I spent the most of my time multitasking while the movie played, attempting to figure out the timeline of Ving Rhames’ zombie movies. I didn’t care what happened in the movie, so long as Rhames’ character doesn’t survive for a sequel!
One of the characters mentions a former friend by the name of Kirkman, obviously an homage to Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead. There’s also a random reference to Army of Darkness inserted as well. I’ve seen quite a few flicks by The Asylum; some good, some not so good. This one: Sadly, Not So Much.
Strength: Decent Actors.
Weakness: Incredible lack of special effects.
WTF Moment: Ving Rhames, slumming for more zombie gore!
Notable Quotes:
– “So, what happened to this Kirkman guy?”
