Per Matt
Addy Miller made history on The Walking Dead.
She was the very first Zombie to appear in the pilot… and the rest is history. She helped launch the TV show into becoming a pop-culture icon. At Pensacola Para Con, I discussed working on the show, getting Andrew Lincoln’s apology and donating convention-appearance proceeds to a noble cause.
Could you tell me a little about your role on The Walking Dead?
– “Well, I’m in Season One, Episode One. I’m in the opening scene, in the pilot. Rick comes across this little girl at a gas station. When she turns around, she’s not a little girl, anymore… She’s dead. Basically, I get my head blown off.”
How long were you shooting that scene?
– “At least seven hours. It wasn’t too bad.”
How was the whole makeup experience?
– “It was fun. I’ve never, really, gone through makeup like that before — even though I’ve been a Zombie before. Greg Nicotero was the makeup artist. We had head molds and teeth molds made and they measured my eyes. By the end of it, I had this prosthetic perfectly made to fit my face.”
How did you find out about the role?
– “They randomly asked me to audition, so I did. A few weeks later, I found out I got a part. It wasn’t that difficult, at all.”
Do you have any behind-the-scenes secrets you can reveal?
– “I don’t know if they’re secrets, but everyone was so friendly. The typical movie set: everyone pranking each other and having a good time.”
Did Andrew Lincoln apologize for having to shoot you?
– “Yeah. Actually, when I first met him, he said, ‘I’d like to get to know you, before I get to kill you.’ He was very cool. I didn’t realize he was British until after we wrapped the whole scene. So, I come back, after I got my makeup off and he talks in this accent. I’m like, ‘Wait. Your British?’ He stays in character, all day.”
Do you attend a lot of conventions?
– “Yeah. In December, it’ll be my third year of going to them.”
What convention will you be attending next?
– “Well, I think I was going to Infect Scranton, up in Pennsylvania, but I just booked a role. So, I may not be there.”
What are some of the other projects you’ve worked on, since The Walking Dead?
– “There’s a lot going on. I did The Three Stooges and I might be doing Night of the Living Dead, soon. I’ve done a lot of indie films and short films, just to build up my resume and hopefully a big film will come up. It kind of did…”
Are you supporting any charities with your autograph proceeds?
– “Both of my brothers have Autism and most of the money I make goes to the Autism Society of North Carolina. That’s a big charity. I’ve worked at two summer camps, now. It’s been really fun. It’s been a great ride.”
