We Are What We Are

While attending the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, I was lucky enough to score tickets to attend the movie screening of We Are What We Are. Presented by Fangoria, the movie screening also featured a brief introduction by Director Jim Mickle, who was in attendance.

The movie delves into the darkness of cannibalism, proving oftentimes to be quite gory. But the focus of this remake of the 2010 Mexican movie lies with the primary family’s backstory. The audience takes a rollercoaster ride as their story unravels.

The breakout star of the movie is Ambyr Childers, who portrays the browbeaten daughter, Iris Parker. She feels a need to follow in the footsteps of her recently deceased mother, but also wants to do the right thing and protect her younger siblings. All the while, her controlling Father (played by Bill Sage) portrays the persuasive patriarch. The entire movie hinges on the decisions she and her younger sister (Julia Garner) make.

At the festive Comic-Con After Party, I asked Director Jim Mickle for a one-word description of the finale, and he hovered around “vindication.”

I had hoped to get a quick interview with Mr. Mickle, who noted he’d be off to direct a different movie for the upcoming month, but he’d get back to me before the movie was released.

We Are What We Are was previously shown at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was quickly picked up for distribution by eOne. It will air later this year.
