It’s been a while since I’ve watched Halloween Wars (at least a year, already) and although I’m finally getting around to watching it, I always enjoy watching this Food Network TV show.

Judged by Cake Decorator Shinmin Li, Emmy-nominated Special Effects Artist Brian Kinney (Insidious, Dark Skies) and Scream Queen Danielle Harris, four teams (Team Twisted Trio vs. Team Black Magic vs. Team Psychotic Misfits vs. Team Crypt Creepers) battle their baked horrors for a large grand prize and publicity.

Each team consists of one pumpkin carver, one sugar artist and one cake craftsman. Competing in two battles, these teams must work together or they’ll surely fall apart.

Challenge One consisted of a Small Scare: each team must create a horror featuring The Devil that also glows in the dark.

Predictably, one of the judges quoted the lame line: “The Devil is in the details.”

Team Black Magic won the devil contest and won an extra assistant (two) for the next challenge, while the rest of the teams only received one. Challenge Two was the Spine Chiller Challenge, creating an image from the Zombie Prom. Each team’s interpretation of high school’s biggest night turning into high school’s biggest fright was a great idea.

Each team had five hours to create their Zombie Prom creation. As with every episode of Halloween Wars I’ve watched, one team overreaches with far too many elements, one team drops a vital part that cannot be replaced, multiple elements fail and somehow, against all odds, each team places an incredible final product.

Team Crypt Creepers won the Zombie Prom, with Team Twisted Trio getting voted out. While I’m still cleaning out my Tivo, I don’t always watch every episode of Halloween Wars. A little goes a long way and this was my total dose of Halloween Wars for the year.
